In August 2021, I had the privilege of joining a small cadre of experts from various fields, including teen media, behavioral health, and health tech, focused on a common goal: to pave the way for a new era in global teen mental health. We didn’t know exactly what that would look like or how to get there, but our newly formed BeMe Health team rolled up our sleeves and got busy trying to map out a path forward.

Today, on our second anniversary as a company, I’m so excited to share a new study funded by the California Health Care Foundation, which found that the BeMe app positively impacts young people’s lives. In partnership with the Stanford Prevention Research Center at Stanford University School of Medicine, the evaluation involved over 13,000 teens nationwide who accessed the BeMe app.

The results, published today in the Journal of Medical Internet Research mHealth and UHealth, showed that many teens in the evaluation reported that the supportive media and activities in the BeMe app helped them feel more hopeful, boosted their self-esteem, & helped them cope better with challenging emotions.

Key Findings from the BeMe Health & Stanford Evaluation

Adolescent Engagement: Teens engaged with the BeMe platform approximately eight times per month, actively participating in both digital (content and activities) and live (coaching) support, indicating high interaction and involvement.

Positive Outcomes: BeMe’s digital content was instrumental in improving hope, self-esteem, and confidence in coping skills. The text-based coaching component was beneficial for teen stress management, and interactive activities proved helpful in dealing with intense emotions.

Impact on Depression and Anxiety: The evaluation revealed that adolescents came to BeMe with high levels of depression (85% positive screen) and anxiety (78% positive screen), reinforcing the app’s relevance in addressing pressing mental health concerns.

Demographic Nuance: Notably, the supportive media content proved especially engaging for younger teens, suggesting BeMe’s potential to cater to diverse demographic needs.

Impact of BeMe Coaching: The evaluation also found that BeMe’s text-based coaching is an effective resource for teenagers to manage stress, and 84% of teens found BeMe Coaching helpful.

✨ We’re also pleased to report a second milestone: As of August 2023, over 50,000 teenagers have sought help from our BeMe Coaches.

I’m so incredibly proud of these two significant milestones for BeMe. This study’s results are the outcome of a lot of hard work by everyone on our team, but most especially our co-founders, Dr. Nicki Tessler and Mandeep Dhillon.

But most of all, I am thrilled to see the positive impact we are having in the lives of teens. And, the best part? We’re just getting started!

Happy Anniversary, BeMe! 🎉
