EdTech’s AI Problem: Parents Don’t Trust What They Don’t Understand
The parent backlash against AI in schools is growing, and edtech companies need to get ahead of it.
I’ve worked in edtech long enough to see the pattern: initial excitement around new technology, followed by parent and political backlash driven by misunderstanding.
New EdWeek polling confirms it: American skepticism toward classroom AI is deepening, with support for basic uses like lesson planning dropping from 62% to 49% in just one year.
The core issue?
Parents don’t understand how school-specific AI platforms differ from consumer chatbots like ChatGPT or Character AI. Nearly 7 in 10 parents oppose giving AI access to student data, yet many educational AI tools require exactly that to function effectively.

If you’re building AI for schools, lead with explaining your safety architecture and child safeguarding policy, rather than focusing on features. Show parents your closed-system design. Make the “why this helps my kid learn better” case crystal clear.
Because right now, parents are hearing “AI in schools” and thinking “uncontrolled internet chatbot.” That’s a messaging problem with a real solution. The companies that crack this communication challenge first will own the market.
