Meta’s AI Glasses Are a Child Privacy Problem
How wearable cameras, AI image tools, and a missing layer of protection put kids’ rights at risk in public spaces
Meta’s AI Glasses are designed to disappear. No bulky lens, an easily disabled recording light, nothing that tells the people around you they’re being filmed. That’s the selling point.
Now picture that design goal in a playground. A school pickup line. The teacup line at Disneyland. Anywhere children gather, someone wearing camera-like eyewear can record them, and no parent or child will ever know it happened or consent to it.
The Pipeline Nobody Designed but Anyone Can Use
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received over a million reports tied to AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in just nine months of 2025. Homeland Security Investigations clocked a 600% jump in AI-linked exploitation reports over the same stretch.
And one documented pathway is brutally simple: someone photographs a child in public, then feeds the image into a “nudify” tool. No hack. No dark web. Just a face and an app, and the result can circulate before a parent knows their kid was ever filmed. Wearable cameras hand that pipeline a frictionless front door.

Why This Is a Child Rights Question, Not Just a Privacy One
This is a child rights question, not just a privacy one. General Comment №25 made clear that children’s rights under the Convention apply fully in digital environments.
The 2025 Joint Statement on Artificial Intelligence and the Rights of the Child, co-signed by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF, UNESCO and more than 50 organizations, calls for AI to be designed, developed and governed in ways that respect and protect children’s rights.
A device that captures kids without consent and feeds tools that can abuse them fails that test before you reach the AI layer.
What We Actually Do About It
Start with the device. Meta already uses AI visual analysis to estimate whether a person is likely a minor, scanning for cues like height and bone structure to place suspected teens into age-appropriate settings. The company built that capability because it decided detecting minors mattered.
If that technology can flag a likely minor to adjust a feed, it can flag one to blur a face at the moment of capture. Build the protection into the capture layer, not the cleanup layer. Regulate the loop, not just the output.
Then the places. Playgrounds, schools, theme parks, pediatric clinics, youth sports, anywhere built around children needs an actual policy on wearable recording devices. Most have nothing right now.

An AirTag Precedent. When Apple’s AirTags started showing up in stalking cases, Apple and Google built a shared standard so that any phone, iPhone or Android, alerts you when an unknown tracker is moving with you. The trackers were made to announce themselves.
AI glasses could do the same, notifying users when a recording device is nearby to restore awareness of being on camera. As Meta, Google, Samsung, and Apple enter this market, the proper approach isn't a courtesy setting but an interoperable signal that all makers broadcast, like trackers do now.
A proximity alert indicates a camera nearby but doesn't specify if it's recording your child or address AI abuse downstream. It's a transparency fix, not a capture-layer fix, so it should complement blurring a minor’s face at capture rather than replace it. Blur protects the child, the alert restores the bystander, and the strongest approach does both.
The Order Is Backward
