This is really an important point and hurdle that doesn’t get much attention unless you talk to kids from disadvantaged areas.
When I was heading up K-12 education programs at Yahoo!, I would frequently talk to kids and hear a version of “Well, I’m from (fill in the blank) — -East Palo Alto/Chicago/Houston, West Salt Lake— I can’t learn how to do (fill in the blank) — -coding, blogging, podcasting.”
Often all they need is a seed of aspiration and belief to be planted for them to have the courage to rise up!
